Kilkenny County Council is pleased to announce the launch of the public consultation process for the Kilkenny Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), a plan that will help shape how people move around Kilkenny City and its surrounding areas into the future.
The SUMP sets out comprehensive transport networks for walking, cycling, public transport and roads, designed to meet the mobility needs of residents, businesses and visitors while enhancing overall quality of life. The plan aims to improve access to education, employment and key services by enhancing transport modes and creating a more accessible, connected and sustainable city.
The development of the SUMP places a strong emphasis on evidence-based decision making and meaningful engagement with local communities and stakeholders. It also builds on extensive work already undertaken in Kilkenny, including previous mobility management plans and a range of local transport studies. The plan aligns with national, regional and local policy objectives across transport, climate, health and urban development.
Stan Cullen, A/Senior Engineer in Kilkenny County Council commented, “The purpose of the SUMP is to support Kilkenny’s continued growth while addressing challenges such as traffic congestion, transport emissions and accessibility. Through the delivery of safer, healthier and sustainable transport options, the plan will help create vibrant urban centres and improve everyday quality of life for people living, working and visiting the city.”
The SUMP also seeks to encourage greater independence and social interaction by reducing unnecessary car journeys and creating more opportunities for walking, cycling and public transport use. Additional benefits include cleaner air, reduced congestion and commuter stress and enhanced pride of place across the city and surrounding communities.
The SUMP presents a range of complementary measures including public realm improvements, a HGV management plan, safe routes to school zones, park and ride/stride facilities, mobility hubs, taxi facilities, shared mobility schemes, wayfinding and a parking strategy.
The SUMP will be incorporated into Kilkenny City and County Development Plan by Variation 10. A copy of the proposed variation, including Strategic Environmental Assessment Screening Report and Appropriate Assessment Screening Report may be inspected for a 4 week period from 15th of May to the 12th of June online at https://consult.kilkenny.ie/ or at The Planning Department, Kilkenny County Council, John Street, Kilkenny.
Members of the public, businesses and community groups are encouraged to participate in the consultation process and help shape the future of transport and mobility in Kilkenny. An in-person event will take place in the Medieval Mile on Thursday, the 21st of May, from 11am-1pm, 2-5pm, and 6-8pm. Submissions may also be made online at consult.kilkenny.ie or by post to: Senior Planner, Kilkenny County Council, John Street, Kilkenny. The closing date for submissions is the 12th of June.
