Kilkenny Traveller lives in focus

Traveller Pride Week is an annual event that celebrates the community, ethnicity, identity, heritage and culture of the Traveller community in Ireland. During Traveller Pride Week, both national and local events take place.

Traveller Pride events are designed to create a greater understanding and acceptance of Traveller culture in Irish society and highlight the many diverse talents and traditions within the Traveller community. It aims to enable an appreciation of Traveller culture and Traveller contributions to the wider society. Traveller Pride also strives to move from the ‘deficit model’ to an ‘asset/strengths-based model’, which emphasizes individuals’ strengths, resources and potential for growth.

The Kilkenny Traveller Community Movement are proud to present ‘Unfiltered – Kilkenny Traveller Lives in Focus, a powerful photographic exhibition capturing the lived experiences, culture, and community of Travellers in Kilkenny over the past 15 years. The exhibition will exhibit images from renowned photographer, Gypsy Ray, as well as images from the personal archives of local contributors. This exhibition shines a light on moments of joy, strength, resilience, and everyday life, through the eyes of those who have lived it and those who have documented it with care.

This week, The Kilkenny Observer offers a sample of some photos that will be on display.

‘Unfiltered – Kilkenny Travellers Lives in Focus’ runs at the Mayfair Library, Parliament Street, Kilkenny from May 19 to 24.
