The Upper Green in Newpark was filled with song and prayer last Wednesday evening as neighbours and friends gathered for a special outdoor community Mass. Chief celebrant Monsignor Dan Carroll was joined by Fr. Paul Kasu, Fr. Noel McGrath, and Monsignor Michael Ryan to concelebrate the moving and inclusive Mass. The ceremony drew families from across the city to share in a public expression of their faith. Organist Mary Butler was joined by Tom Hickey and the choir from St. John’s Church, whose music and song added a solemn and joyful tone to the evening. In his homily, Fr. Dan spoke about the importance of community in bringing a parish to life. He reflected on the need for gratitude and on finding God in our daily activities. He concluded by thanking everyone for coming together “in faith and in fellowship, under the open sky.” Following the final blessing, the Residents’ Association presented flowers to Lil Malone on the occasion of her 93rd birthday, and to Seán and Ann McHugh on their 62nd wedding anniversary. The gathering continued with tea, homemade cakes, and plenty of conversation. Children played on the grass while older members of the community enjoyed the pleasant evening and friendly company.Organiser Michael Deegan said the event was a wonderful success. “It was lovely to see so many people come out to celebrate the Eucharist together in such a relaxed and welcoming setting. This annual Mass continues to strengthen our community and has become an integral part of our development,” he said. He thanked Chairman Jack Fahy and the Residents’ Committee, the readers, gift-bearers, those who provided refreshments, and the stewards. Special praise was given to Jane Dineen, who coordinated the event, and to altar servers Ashier, Rosie, and Thomas, whose presence added to the solemnity of the occasion.
