Kilkenny County Council’s Community Section, in partnership with the Department of Children, Disability and Equality, successfully hosted National Play Day 2026 on Saturday, 4th of July 2026 in the beautiful surroundings of Kilkenny Castle Park.
The free family event, delivered in collaboration with the Office of Public Works (OPW), Healthy Ireland, Sonix Entertainment, and the Children and Young People’s Services Committee (CYPSC), attracted large numbers of families from across the county for an afternoon of fun, creativity, and outdoor play. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing this year’s event as the biggest and best to date.
National Play Day is an annual celebration of the important role that play has in children’s lives, encouraging families to spend quality time together while highlighting the value of play for children’s development, learning, wellbeing, and social connection. This year’s theme, “Play for All,” focused on ensuring that children of all ages and abilities could participate and enjoy a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Children and families enjoyed a wide range of free activities and workshops throughout the afternoon, including magic shows, yoga sessions, storytelling, giant games, balance bikes, colouring activities, and soft play areas. The event provided countless opportunities for exploration, imagination, creativity, and active outdoor play.
Outdoor play remains a vital part of childhood, helping children to develop physical skills, confidence, resilience, and creativity while developing a sense of adventure and discovery. Events such as National Play Day also provide valuable opportunities for families and communities to come together and connect through creativity and play.
Kilkenny County Council would like to thank all partner organisations, volunteers, facilitators, and attendees who contributed to the success of the event. Their support helped create a memorable day for families across the county and reinforced the importance of providing accessible play opportunities for children and young people.
National Play Day is supported through funding provided by the Department of Children, Disability and Equality, which supports local authorities nationwide in creating and hosting play and recreational opportunities for children and young people in their communities.
