Mick McGuinness (Michael J. McGuinness, 1921–2003) was a highly influential former Mayor of Kilkenny, serving seven times. He was a long-standing councillor (County and Borough), and a pivotal figure in local development, known for tourism, the Beer Festival, and for securing the Health Board HQ. Mick was also a Peace Commissioner.
And now, his son Eugene, an Independent councillor on Kilkenny County Council, has been appointed a Peace Commissioner.
Peace Commissioners in Ireland are appointed by the Minister for Justice and are generally trusted, established individuals of good character from the local community. They are often nominated by public figures and serve voluntarily to witness signatures and administer oaths, with a focus on local need and suitability, excluding most legal or religious roles due to potential conflicts.
Speaking to The Kilkenny Observer, Eugene said he was very happy with the appointment.
“I am delighted to announce that I’ve just been appointed a Peace Commissioner by Minister Niall Collins TD in recognition of my work here in Kilkenny as a councillor. This will allow me to offer a much more comprehensive service to my constituents. I would particularly like to thank Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere TD for doing all the background work necessary to get this over the line; it was greatly appreciated.”
Councillor McGuinness went on to say: “I am delighted to see that my hard work in Kilkenny as a councillor has been recognised by the Minister, considering that, as an Independent, I fall outside the broader circles of the main political parties. This appointment will allow me to offer a much more comprehensive service for my constituents.”
