Kilkenny County Council hosted a Cathaoirleach’s Reception in partnership with Kilkenny City Harriers on the 6th of May to honour Kilkenny athlete Peter Lynch following his outstanding international achievements.
Cathaoirleach Cllr. Mary Hilda Cavanagh welcomed guests to celebrate Peter’s remarkable success, including his record-breaking performance at the London Marathon, where he set a new Irish record of 2:06:08, finishing ninth overall and the first European home.
Cllr. Cavanagh also praised his recent sub-one-hour half marathon in New York and described his achievements as a testament to dedication, resilience and perseverance saying, “I had the pleasure of being in New York last March to witness Peter break the hour for the half marathon. To see an Irish athlete run 59:52 on the streets of New York was something I will never forget.”
A member of Kilkenny City Harriers, Peter’s journey began at a young age and has seen him progress through national and international competition, representing Ireland at European level and competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) during his time in the United States.
Since joining the Puma Elite Running Group, he has achieved a series of milestones, including multiple Irish records and standout performances on the global stage.
Congratulating Peter, Cllr. Cavanagh said he is “a wonderful ambassador for Kilkenny and an inspiration to young athletes across the county.”
Kilkenny County Council extended its congratulations to Peter and wished him continued success in the years ahead, expressing confidence that his achievements on the international stage will continue to grow.
