Know your B Vitamins

BY CLAIR WHITTY

B vitamins are important vitamins that are needed every day for health. They are required for energy and red blood cell production, immunity, nervous system, and are essential for healthy skin, hair, and nails. B vitamins keep practically every cell in the body healthy and happy.

We need a supply of B vitamins everyday as they are not stored in the body. They’re found in chicken, meat, seafood, eggs, dairy products, legumes, green vegetables, whole grains, seeds, and nutritional yeast.
Stress, worry, and anxiety can deplete them. You might not absorb them well if you eat on the go or if you’re not relaxed when eating.

Common symptoms of B vitamin deficiency are; tiredness, confusion, inability to focus, low mood, skin problems, and hair loss. Each B vitamin has a special role to play and from time to time you may need larger amounts of a particular one to resolve an issue. Don’t take own B on its own for long periods as they work synergistically together, opt for a high strength B complex or one that gives you a higher level of the one you need for long term use.

B6 deficiency can cause cracks around the mouth and lips, nausea, or skin rashes. You can be deficient if you’re on the contraceptive pill, have nausea, or skin rashes. It’s commonly used to help PMT.

B5 is used to help deal with deal with stressful situations.

Signs of low levels of B9 also known as folate, can include irritability, headache, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and open sores in the mouth.

Signs of B12 deficiency can include tiredness, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, confusion poor memory, soreness of the tongue or mouth.

A bright red tongue, vomiting, fatigue, or digestive issues such as nausea can be associated with B3 deficiency. B3 is commonly used to help lower cholesterol.

If you want to top up on B vitamins you’ll be spoilt for choice. One of my favourites is Solgar B100 Complex high strength one a day supplement. It’s ideal for tiredness giving a good energy boost. It can help you deal with stressful situations. It’s one I recommend for hair loss when associated with stress, and is good for skin health too.
