Nearly 50 Years of Handblown Glass: Jerpoint Glass Honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award

For 47 years, the furnaces at Jerpoint Glass in Stoneyford, Co. Kilkenny have been lit for one purpose: making beautiful, functional glass by hand. That dedication was recognised nationally when the family-run studio received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Irish Country Magazine Irish Made Awards 2026, supported by Circle Club.

The award was presented by Sophie Appleby of Appleby Jewellers at the Johnstown Estate, Enfield, Co. Meath on Wednesday, 30 September, and accepted by co-founder Kathleen Leadbetter and her son Rory. On the night, guests were shown a behind the scenes video filmed at the Jerpoint Glass studio, where Rory and Kathleen spoke passionately about their story, their commitment to Irish craft, and their pride in the people who have worked alongside them.

Kathleen founded Jerpoint Glass with her late husband Keith in 1979. Just four years later, in 1983, the studio won the overall award at the RDS Craft Competition, the Californian Gold Medal, for a set of six wine glasses. From a small workshop, Jerpoint has grown into one of Ireland’s best known names in handblown glass, recognised for its colourful collections and traditional techniques. Today the studio and shop are also a creative hub, showcasing Irish art, craft and design alongside its own glass.

Accepting the award, Rory paid tribute to his mother. He spoke of the many roles Kathleen has held in the business, and how she steered it through recessions and energy crises while employing more than 40 local people over the years.

“If people hadn’t put their faith in our product nearly 50 years ago, we wouldn’t be here today receiving this prestigious award,” said Rory. “That’s why we encourage everyone to support Irish Made, and especially the local crafters just starting out.”

Rory also thanked Irish Country Magazine for championing Irish makers and businesses through the Irish Made Awards.

The award follows Kathleen’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Kilkenny Business Awards in 2024, presented by the Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce.

It was a strong night for Kilkenny craft, with neighbours Nicholas Mosse Pottery winning the Irish Gift category and Overall Winner.
