I often look at others and wonder what is going on in their lives, and the truth is that no matter how well we know another person, there are always hidden thoughts, emotions, memories and struggles that remain unseen. Human beings carry invisible worlds within them, and because of this, we can never fully know what another person is going through.
Every individual is shaped by events we may know nothing of. Someone who smiles a lot may be in deep inner grief. Another may present as distant because they are coping with anxiety, depression or overwhelming stress. A seemingly confident person may secretly fear failure, while a person whose anger is easily triggered may have had difficult traumas in earlier times. Remember, “You can’t tell a book by its cover!”
Social expectations often make people suppress their emotions rather than show or express them. Many individuals put on a brave face even when they are struggling and believe that sharing feelings is a weakness.
They may fear being rejected, misunderstood or treated differently if they reveal their pain. As a result, people wear emotional masks that protect them from vulnerability while also making it difficult for others to recognise their suffering. After all, none of us are mind readers! A person can seem to function well yet still feel lonely or desperate inside. Outward success does not always reflect inner peace.
Everybody’s experiences are deeply personal. Two people may face similar events yet respond in completely different ways since our responses are determined by our backgrounds, characters, values, relationships and histories, which all influence how we process life’s events.
We all interpret situations differently, so it’s impossible to completely understand another person’s emotional reality. One person may see the challenge as an opportunity for growth, while another may experience a lot of fear and lack of self-confidence.
Modern society often encourages quick judgments. Social media, especially, allows people to share carefully edited moments of happiness, achievement and success while hiding moments of pain, failure or vulnerability. This creates an illusion that others have perfect lives. No one has a perfect, unchallenged life. Comparing ourselves to these polished images is a waste of time. Everyone hurts sometimes, and it’s an important message for our youth who follow unrealistic, toxically positive influencers!
Recognising that we cannot fully know another person’s struggles encourages empathy. Empathy does not require us to completely understand someone’s experience, but we can acknowledge the reality of their feelings and try to walk a little in their shoes.
Choosing kindness over judgment becomes easier when we remember that every person has a rich inner life and may be fighting unseen inner battles. A simple smile, a patient conversation or a small act of generosity may have a greater impact than we realise because we never know what’s going on for another person.
Once we can understand this, it’s a reminder to be careful with our words. Casual comments can affect someone and provoke an unintended response. A person who is already overwhelmed may get easily triggered. On the other hand, encouraging words can be very supportive. Since we cannot see another person’s hidden struggles, it’s better to be compassionate rather than critical.
By acknowledging our own limitations, we become more humble. We often believe our assumptions are accurate because they are based on our observations and projections. Appearances can be misleading. Instead of believing we know someone’s motives or feelings, we should remain open to listening, learning and enquiring.
Genuine conversations and sharing our own frailties often help others open up and express themselves. These exchanges enable us to forge strong relationships based on respect rather than assumption.
Ultimately, the fact that we can never fully know what another person is going through is a reminder of the complexity of every human being. Every single individual carries hidden dreams, fears, memories and invisible emotions unseen by others. While we may never completely understand another person’s journey, we can choose to meet them with patience, kindness and compassion. When we fully understand that everyone, regardless of age, colour, creed, gender or ability, has an inner story, we can try to create a world where people feel safe to express their struggles and hopefully become more willing to support one another.
The truth is: every person’s life is more complex than it appears, and even a small act of kindness can help ease a hidden burden.
