Carrickshock and Rower Inistioge played out a draw in the Michael Lyng Motors Intermediate League clash before a large attendance at Mullinavat GAA Grounds. Even though they led 0-10 to 0-2 after fifteen minutes, it still took a 62nd minute injury time point from Jim Ryan to snatch Rower Inistioge a share of the spoils.
For the second week in a row Carrickshock were slow starters. Last week they went nine points down to Mooncoin early on and could not retrieve the deficit. On this occasion they recovered to draw the game.
It was really indiscipline that got the Shocks back into the game after the first quarter. By the interval there was five points between them, 0-12 to 0-7, a series of Eoghan O’Neill frees having reduced the margin.
The second half started with two Carrickshock scores from an Eoghan O’Neill free and Darragh Brennan, to leave just three points between them. O’Neill and Lyng exchanged pointed frees consecutively to leave it 0-14 to 0-11. Jim Ryan (RI) and John Power (free) exchanged points shortly afterwards.
Veteran Michael Rice had come on as a half sub for Shocks and he played a big part in getting his side back into this game. He pointed on 47 minutes to leave just two points between them. The Rower were reduced to fourteen men a minute later when substitute Kevin Murphy was thought to have contacted the headgear of an opponent. As often happens the fourteen men upped their game and two Eoghan Lyng frees and a Jim Lyng point left the Rower Inistioge five points clear 0-18 to 0-13.
Carrickshock’s Jake O’Dwyer got them back within striking distance with a rasper of a shot past Paddy Lyng in the Rower goal with five minutes remaining (1-13 to 0-18).
The teams exchanged further pointed scores, before Carrickshock eventually drew level, and then went a point clear with an Eoghan O Neill free after the Rower incurred a technical foul.
But then a distance long range free in added time from the Rower keeper was collected by Jim Ryan for a match saving equaliser.
Both sides will feel a need for improvement after this contest. Eoghan O’Neill, John Power, Michael Rohan and Michael Rice were amongst the better Shocks performers.
For the Rower Inistioge, their spirit with fourteen men is something to cling to for round three and beyond. They had impressive opening half displays from Richie Leahy and Tom O’Callaghan, and throughout from Jim Ryan and Eoghan Lyng.
Overall, this was a very average contest with only the final ten minutes producing real entertainment, in what beforehand was a stop start, scrappy type game.
