Christmas is not for everyone

BY CLAIR WHITTY

Christmas is not for everyone, I say this every year. But it isn’t for everyone and there are many reasons for this. It might be that your family have grown up and left home and there are no children in the house anymore. It isn’t the same without the young ones, the house feeling quiet, and lonely. A relationship breakdown with family, work colleagues or a partner can make for a very difficult and sad Christmas. The loss of a loved one whom you cared about or who deeply impacted on your life can have a huge effect on you.

Their presence can be more noticeably missed, and the pain of loss more intense at times like this when you would have enjoyed being with them. Especially at get-togethers with family, friends, or work colleagues.

You may not like social events at all, and people can try to talk you into going to something that you just don’t want to go to. My advice being hold your ground, trust yourself and do what you think is best for you. Some of you can’t handle the noise and the fuss in the shops, the traffic delays, or the sparkling of the Christmas lights, the relentless Christmas music, it can all be too much. Some of you will stay sane by staying away from town.

Those of you that work in shops, hospitality, health care, or public service have to leave your troubles at home. Some days pain, sadness, or stress seeps through and this is ok too. We all have days like this, and not just those who are working. None of us know what is going on for anyone else. Compassion and understanding can go a long way.

Some of you may be upset and distressed about world events, and saddened to see the devastating effects of wars, climate change, and injustice that many face right now.

I guess I don’t have to labour the point that some do not like Christmas, that’s ok. And for those who have dark days, I hope that there is some light at times for you too. All we can do is respect each other, and be aware that Christmas is not for everyone and we won’t always know why. Nonetheless, I wish you a safe and peaceful Christmas.
