Businesses come up trumps to help light up the City as never before

In a remarkable display of community spirit and collaboration, local businesses in Kilkenny have played an important role in transforming the City’s Christmas lights into a dazzling spectacle for the 2023 Christmas season. Their generous contributions have complemented the substantial funding by Kilkenny County Council, marking the most significant upgrade in festive lighting the City has seen in a generation.

Former Kilkenny hurling superstar and current TV hurling pundit, Jackie Tyrrell, along with his sons Harry and Freddie, had the honour of switching on the lights, amidst huge positivity. Tim Butler, Director of Services at Kilkenny County Council, expressed his delight with the positive reception:

“We have been delighted with the reaction to the new lights. A huge amount of research and planning has gone into the new lighting system. We are thrilled that our lights are now comparable to any public Christmas lights in the country. In particular, we have ensured that the lighting is of the highest possible spec in terms of sustainability and energy use. All the lights are LED, and the savings in electricity use will be significant. We also expect that the lights will last for many years, presenting further savings and helping Kilkenny to seriously address its commitments to cutting carbon emissions for the generations to come.”

Acknowledging the financial support, Tim Butler added, “In terms of total costs of the project, Kilkenny County Council provided 60% of the total funding and we are extremely grateful to local businesses and Kilkenny LEADER Company for coming on board to fund the remainder of the costs.”

Kilkenny LEADER, responsible for local and community development, played a crucial role in encouraging small businesses and community enterprises to contribute. John Hurley, CEO of Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce, emphasised the importance of creating an attractive setting for shoppers, both local and visiting, who contribute significantly to supporting local businesses.

Numerous businesses in Kilkenny, ranging from €100 to €500 contributions, have collectively made a substantial impact. Nine businesses, including Abbot Ireland Kilkenny, Campsited, Clunetech, KIDCO, Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce, MacDonagh Junction, Merlyn Showers, Michael Lyng Motors, and MK Illumination, made major contributions ranging from €1,500 to €7,500. Yulefest Event Manager, Marian Flannery, extended special acknowledgment to festival fundraising agent Cathy O’Connor for her dedicated efforts in securing this invaluable business sponsorship.

She stated, “The largest contributors have been very generous, but the more than thirty small and medium-sized businesses who have contributed have really played their part in making the City a place we can all be proud of this Christmas and for many years to come.”

This collaborative effort showcases the strength and unity of Kilkenny’s business community, creating a festive atmosphere that residents and visitors alike can enjoy into the future.
