A small group of artists based in the village of Bennettsbridge have been enjoying some great recognition in recent years. Their annual exhibition mounted in the local community hall during Kilkenny Arts Week has become one of the “must see” events. Some of this can probably be attributed to the advertising in the AKA and TCAF brochures but the variation of style and subject matter and the excellent presentation of the exhibition makes it a stand alone event.
The thirteen artists including one male have been together for almost two decades and friendship and a love of art is the glue that binds them. For most of that time they have been tutored by artist and friend, Julie Moorhouse and her experience and enthusiasm is part of their success story.
The wide range includes work in oils, acrylics, watercolour, pastels, collage and this year some gelli plate printing. Under the guidance of their tutor Julie, this group continues to explore alternative ways of making art while encouraging each individual’s artistic interests.
On Friday night, 7th August, members will gather in the local Community Centre for the launch of BRUSHSTROKES, their latest production. The group is thrilled that local artist Trini Kenny has agreed to open the exhibition. Artists have been working hard for the past few months and are delighted to present the results of their labour to the public. Most of the thirteen strong group have been together for a good many years and are very appreciative of the support of Siobhán O’Brien and her team at the KCETB.
Artists showing their work this year include, Una Gibbons, Daphne Hunt, Lin Cowley, Joan Cleere, Tom Barrett, Marion Murphy, Elma Kharaghani, Mary Dunny, Mary KIng, Diane Walsh, Marie Griffin, Helen Farrell and Joan Healy. This annual exhibition mounted during Kilkenny Arts Week attracts a large number of visitors and gives the artists a chance to discuss their work. It also affords them the opportunity to encourage new members.
