In Goodly Barrow we were both surprised and delighted to be given an award at the Carlow Chamber of Commerce Business awards last week. Winning Best Hospitality Provider, in a very tough field, is testimony to the hard work of the staff, Bryan Donnelly and his team, and the wonderful support we have had from our customers from both sides of the Barrow. A huge thanks from us to all involved.
The Goodly Barrow (which takes its name from the brilliant book The Goodly Barrow authored by TF O Sullivan, now in reprint) is the brainchild of Tom O’Neill originally from Ballon, Co. Carlow, now living in Kilkenny.
The Goodly Barrow, both a wonderful Museum of the Waterways in Ireland and an award winning cafe, is housed within the stone walls of an old canal store on the banks of the mighty Barrow. The cafe has become known for its friendly service, great coffee and freshly made food (healthy in the main plus a few indulgent offerings such as our warm, sticky cinnamon buns!). The Museum is a treasure trove of information, including rare footage of those who worked on the rivers and canals, and interviews with river men and women.
The restored building, which has lived many lives (including that of a coffin factory under Dick and Frances Long) is now alive again. For that we are grateful.
Tucked beside the River Barrow in Goresbridge, the Goodly Barrow is a special destination where good food, local heritage and the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside come together. More than simply a place to stop for a cup of tea or lunch, this welcoming café and museum offers visitors an opportunity to enjoy a little taste of Ireland’s waterways history in a wonderfully scenic setting.
Situated in the picturesque village of Goresbridge, Co Kilkenny, the Goodly Barrow offers visitors a welcoming combination of good food, local history and beautiful riverside surroundings. Housed in a restored old canal store, this unique café and museum celebrates the heritage of the River Barrow while providing a relaxing place to enjoy a meal, meet friends or take a break from exploring the countryside.
The building itself has a fascinating connection with the area’s past. The River Barrow once played an important role in transporting goods and supporting trade, helping shape the lives of communities along its banks. Today, the museum brings that history to life through an interesting collection of maps, photographs, artefacts, information panels and video interviews. Visitors can discover how the waterways operated and learn more about the people who depended on them.
The café complements this heritage experience with a tempting selection of freshly prepared food. The menu includes homemade soups, sandwiches, salads and the popular Goodly Bowls, with an emphasis on fresh ingredients, herbs and spices. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices are also available, ensuring there is something to suit a variety of tastes and dietary requirements.
Visitors have praised the quality of the homemade soups, generously filled toasted sandwiches and fresh salads. Those with a sweet tooth can also enjoy a selection of cakes and baked treats, with the cinnamon buns proving particularly popular. A cup of freshly prepared coffee or tea provides the perfect finishing touch to a leisurely visit.
Another of the Goodly Barrow’s attractions is its location overlooking the River Barrow and the nearby bridge. The peaceful setting provides an ideal backdrop for lunch or a relaxing coffee break. Comfortable indoor seating is available, while outdoor seating allows visitors to enjoy the riverside atmosphere when the weather is favourable.
Its location also makes the café an appealing stopping point for walkers exploring the Barrow Way. After a stroll along the riverbank, visitors can relax over a bowl of soup or a sandwich before continuing their journey. The welcoming outdoor area also makes it an attractive option for those walking with their dogs. What makes the Goodly Barrow special is the way it combines hospitality, heritage and the natural beauty of the local landscape. It gives a historic building a new lease of life while providing a valuable meeting place for the community.
Whether visiting for the food, exploring the museum or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings, the Goodly Barrow offers a pleasant experience in the heart of Goresbridge. It is a reminder that local history and good hospitality do combine to create somewhere truly worth discovering.
