United In Collaboration Launch

College of Further Education and Training Kilkenny

The annual Furniture Design and Making Exhibition, held at the MacDonagh Junction Shopping Centre Kilkenny from 18th May to 22nd May, was an outstanding success, drawing large crowds and celebrating the immense talent of local learners. Presenting works under the banner of the College of Further Education and Training, Kilkenny, the showcase highlighted a masterful blend of traditional woodwork craftsmanship and modern innovation, with pieces from the ceramics and art groups adding to the diverse range of talent on display.

A Vibrant Launch and Community Endorsement

The exhibition’s official launch brought together education leaders, civic representatives, and the public to honour the students’ hard work. Mayor John Coonan praised the high calibre of the learners’ work and noted how such exhibitions enrich the cultural and creative fabric of Kilkenny City.

Joan Griffin VTOS Co-ordinator and Peter O’Carroll Co-ordinator of the Furniture and Design group from the College of Further Education and Training spoke passionately about the dedication required to complete these complex pieces. The class was commended for their exceptional technical development, and the sheer creativity embedded in every design.

Representing the student cohort, Alex Cahill delivered an insightful address. Alex thanked the teachers, families, and the wider Kilkenny community for their support, emphasising how the hands-on curriculum empowers students to transition smoothly into the professional design industry or start independent businesses.

Stunning Craftsmanship on Display

The busy thoroughfare of MacDonagh Junction Shopping Centre provided an ideal backdrop, ensuring high visibility from shoppers and craft enthusiasts. The collection featured a diverse range of bespoke items.

The exceptional standard of finish on each item proved that these adult learners have reached a professional level of technical proficiency.

Future Opportunities for Graduates

Beyond a public display of artistic talent, the exhibition serves as a critical launching pad. By engaging directly with the public, students gained valuable experience in marketing their skills and discussing design concepts with potential buyers. Many pieces drew high praise for their commercial viability, signalling bright careers ahead for the Class of 2026.

The Kilkenny and Carlow Education and Training Board (KCETB) and the college staff extended their gratitude to the management of MacDonagh Junction for providing the vibrant public space. Ultimately, the five-day event was a resounding triumph, proving that the future of Irish furniture design, wood craftsmanship, art and ceramics remains in highly capable hands.
