Kilkenny woman walks 236km to honour loved ones and support COPD community

A member of COPD Support Ireland’s Kilkenny branch has gone above and beyond a nationwide walking challenge, completing an incredible 236 kilometres during the month of March.

The initiative, organised by RIP.ie, encouraged participants across Ireland to walk 20 kilometres throughout March 2026 to honour loved ones, support local charities, and celebrate the strength of community.

Inspired by the challenge, Kilkenny resident Nellie Doherty set herself the goal of not only taking part but exceeding expectations. By the end of the month, Nellie had walked an impressive 236 kilometres, dedicating her achievement to all past members of the local COPD group who have passed away.

COPD Support, Ireland’s Kilkenny group is committed to improving the quality of life for people living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease through regular, guided exercise and community support.

The group meets every Tuesday at 2pm for a one-hour session at Loughboy Community Centre (behind St. Fiacre’s Church). Sessions are led by fully qualified local trainer Gina Prónay-Zakar and focus’s on improving cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, bone health, mobility, and overall well being in a safe and supportive environment.

New members are always welcome. Anyone interested in joining the group can contact James Cox by phone or text on 086 353 5424.

About RIP.ie Remembers

RIP.ie is a trusted platform that brings compassionate communities together in times of loss, and in 2026 they proudly celebrated their 20th year. To mark this milestone, they invited their community to take part in a meaningful nationwide event — a 20km walk during March 2026. This shared journey offered an opportunity to honour loved ones, support local charities, and celebrate the strength of community. By turning remembrance into a real-world experience, shared grief becomes shared purpose, fostering healing and unity. For every charity registrant, a square foot of native woodland will be planted, creating a living legacy of remembrance.
